Music Ministries

We take special pride in our music ministry at St. Joan of Arc and have a variety of opportunities for sharing talents. We welcome singers as cantors and in our many choirs, and instrumentalists for the occasional inclusion in our music at masses.

Contact our Director of Music, Jo Ellen Madden 847.673.0409 for more information on how to share your musical talents.

Cantors

Cantors lead the congregation in song during the mass. Our cantoring program is continually evolving which keeps the leading of song at masses fresh. We introduce cantors to our parish as high schoolers and rotate all cantors. Singing for SJA is not a paid position, but one of joy and willingness to share a talent. If you enjoy singing and have a strong voice, please consider cantoring at SJA.

Children’s & Youth Choirs

The SJA Children’s & Youth Choirs began nearly 20 years ago and has developed into a 50+ member combined choir — Children’s Choir (4th & 5th grades) and Youth Choir (6th – 8th grades). All parishioner kids are invited to join! This combined choir sings once a month at the Children Masses during the school year, Christmas Eve, the Barnes and Noble Book Fair, at St. Agnes (our sharing parish) and our Marian Prayer service. In the past we have sung at Emily Oaks, The Chicago Garden Show at Navy Pier, and the National Anthem for the Chicago Cubs.

SJA Adult Choir

The SJA Adult Choir is a fun and growing organization, with more than 30 members. Participation is easy and flexible, and we sing during these times of year: the four Sundays of Advent, a few Sundays following Christmas Day, most Sundays during Lent, Holy Week, Easter and a few Sundays afterwards. We take a short break during Ordinary Times. We have a few evening rehearsals, but most learning is done via a CD created by the Director of Music. Before we sing at a 10:30 AM mass we meet at 9:30 AM to rehearse in the church. Please consider joining this wonderful group of people. Music reading skills not necessary.

Boyz Band

Like to play the guitar? Like to sing? Then this is your group! The Boyz Band is an easy, fun group of SJA men who like to create music together. This is a low-key commitment, with perhaps one or two rehearsals before singing or performing a mass, typically once or twice a year. Music reading skills not necessary.

Sisters in Song

If you love to sing and enjoy all-female choirs, then Sisters In Song is for you. Often singing three-part harmonies, this choir leads liturgies a few times a year, one being the SJA Women’s Club Membership Mass. This is a great way to meet other ladies of the parish. Music reading skills not necessary.

Instrumentalists

We love to enhance our liturgies with instruments – flutes, guitars, trumpets, oboes, violin – if you play an instrument and can share your talent, contact Jo Ellen Madden 847.673.0409.

Music at Mass

To listen and learn the music we use at mass for each season, click here for audio clips.  As we move toward the Lenten season, you can begin learning the new mass setting:  Mass of Christ the Savior by Dan Schutte.  We will begin singing these mass parts on Ash Wednesday, February 22.
