I hope you all had a good spring break! Our 5th grade camp experience is less than a month away. As mentioned earlier, Camp Duncan will take place on Wednesday, May 10 and Thursday, May 11 this year. We will travel to Camp Duncan in Ingleside, Illinois for an overnight trip. Students will be at camp for two days and one night.
Please note that we are looking for 3 parent chaperones for our overnight camping trip. Since we will have separate cabins for girls and boys, we would especially appreciate it if we can find at least one male chaperone — and someone who can take pictures would be appreciated as well. Moms welcome too! Please email me if you are interested.
We will leave SJA at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10. The students should come to school at the usual time that day, but they are not expected to wear their uniforms. They should report to the gym, not the classroom, with their luggage. Camp Duncan is 1–1.5 hours away, depending on traffic. Students should pack a disposable lunch for Wednesday to be eaten once we arrive at Camp Duncan. We plan to return to SJA on Thursday, May 11 by 2:30 p.m., depending on traffic. Students should plan to leave school at the usual time on Thursday.
During our time at Camp Duncan, we will be participating in many different educational and team building activities. Current classes include Wilderness Survival, Boating, Orienteering, a GPS Scavenger Hunt, Hiking, Climbing Tower, Water Ecology, Duncan Detectives (a version of an Escape Classroom), Teams Courses, Rope Games, and Group Initiatives. The classes are subject to change depending on weather and available teaching staff at the camp.
The price for Camp Duncan is $89.00 per student and includes bus transportation both days, lodging, all activities, classes, and three meals. Please make checks payable to St. Joan of Arc School so we can write one check to Camp Duncan and the bus company.
A sample schedule, a suggested packing list, a waiver, and the permission slip have been sent home. I have also attached a medical form for students who need to take specific medications while at camp. Please return the signed permission slip and the waiver, enclosed with a check for the cost of the camping trip no later than Thursday, May 4. If you need to pay in installments, please let me know.
Finally, there is a list of things that students are not allowed to bring on the recommended packing handout. Please note that students should not bring electronics, including their ChromeBooks, iPhones, iPads, Kindles, iPods, tablets, and so on. If an emergency arises, you may feel free to contact me on my cell at (847) 987-3861 or contact Camp Duncan at (847) 546-8086. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected].
On a personal note, I still have fond memories from my 5th grade outdoor education trip at SJA, and I am looking forward to sharing this experience with your kids. Outdoor education is not only part of the 5th grade curriculum, it is an important step out of their comfort zone and I believe that this trip will help them bond and work together as a class. I hope some of you can join us as chaperones.
