Every first Thursday of the month, St Joan of Arc service ministry volunteers serve the homeless and the needy. We do this through Interfaith Action of Evanston, who operate a soup kitchen at the First United Methodist Church, 516 Church St. (corner of Church & Hinman) in Evanston. Parishes and congregations within Evanston take turns staffing the kitchen. This particular soup kitchen feeds dinner to approximately 70 to 100 individuals, and also provides a bag lunch for them to take home for the next day.
Volunteers from St. Joan of Arc work at the First United Methodist Church soup kitchen only on the first Thursday of each month. Responsibilities include purchasing of food, cooking premade lasagnas and potatoes at home, delivering cooked food to the facility, delivering premade lunches made by the school to facility, kitchen prep, serving the food, and clean up. One parishioner also provides live piano music. Some volunteers like to sit and talk with our guests. The time commitment is normally from 5:30-7 PM. Funds for the purchasing of the food comes from the Soup Kitchen Fund and contribution box in the back of the church.
If you would like to volunteer to help on site please arrive at First United Methodist Church at 5:30. We are in need of a piano player to play during dinner.
Contact Coordinators Mike & Julie Lynk, [email protected] or Cookie Schaefer through the Parish Office 847. 328.1430 for more information and to sign up to help.
